The Ball Project is a Garda Youth Diversion Project that works with young people in the Ballybeg, Larchville & Lisduggan estates of Waterford City. The project started running in 1996.

The B.A.L.L. Project is a community based Youth Diversion Project which aims to meet the particular needs of unattached “at risk” young people and divert them from offending behaviour.  The needs of the young people are met through participation in varied programs and opportunities, through challenging behaviour and encouragement to participate in decision making in an empowering way.

Group Work

The majority of the project participants take part in weekly group sessions where they are encouraged to develop key social skills

Educational Support, Training & Personal Development

The BALL project offers educational support to the young people involved in an effort to encourage young people to stay in school, access alternative educational services, access training and increase employability

Informal Contact Sessions

These sessions give the young people the opportunity to engage with the project on a informal basis to avail of the games room, café etc. in order to build and strengthen relationships.

Recreational Activities

Summer Programmes, day trips/activities and residential programmes are offered to all young people participating in the project. These are used as incentives to encourage positive participation amongst the young people and also allow for relationship to develop and improve between the young people and the leaders. They also provide the young people with the opportunity to try out new activities.

1:1 work

These sessions can be either formal or non-formal. A formal session would be one where there is an agreed subject and the discussion is focussed on particular issues.  A non-formal session may be a cup of tea with the young person to check in with them to see how they are doing and if any points arise they can be dealt with at the time or a formal session arranged if required. All participants avail of a thrice yearly evaluation and planning 1:1 session to monitor progress.
