Suir Valley CBDI – Tree Planting

An initiative by Suir Valley CBDI – A Tree of Hope planted in Carrick-on-Suir to mark International Overdose Awareness Day 2025.

The Hawthorn tree was planted in the garden of Carrick-on-Suir Library. This initiative was supported by representatives of the Suir Valley Community Based Drugs Initiative, Carrick-on-Suir Men’s Shed, Carrick-on-Suir Lions Club, Carrick-on-Suir Library Community Garden Committee, Waterford South Tipperary Community Youth Service, Carrick Library and Waters Monumental. They gathered for the tree planting ceremony at Carrick-on-Suir Library on August 29 for the planting of the Tree of Hope to mark International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31.

Darren Waters and James Waters of Waters Monumental in Carrick on Suir kindly donated a beautifully engraved plaque inscribed with a quote from American poet Emily Dickenson’s famous poem: “Hope” is the thing with feathers”.

It read: “Hope is the thing with feathers, that perches on the soul, and sings the tune without the words, and never stops at all”.

Gail Sheridan, Community Drugs Worker at Suir Valley Community Based Drugs Initiative, spoke of how this beautiful tree will thrive and grow to highlight International Overdose Awareness Day and also acknowledge the lives that have been impacted by substance misuse in the local community.
