Waterford Comhairle na nOg visit to Leinster House

In  a significant move to address youth mental health challenges in Waterford, members of Waterford Comhairle na nÓg recently visited Leinster House to meet with local TDs and Minister of State for Mental Health and Older People, Mary Butler. Their mission: to advocate for the establishment of a Jigsaw youth mental health service in Waterford, a region currently lacking this vital supportThe delegation, comprising Comhairle members Mollie Mernagh, Eve Meleady and Theo Hannigan presented a petition that has garnered over 1,176 signatures since its launch at the West Waterford Festival of Food in 2024. The petition underscores the urgent need for accessible and affordable mental health services for young people in the area .

The group’s advocacy is bolstered by research from the Waterford Children and Young People’s Services Committee (CYPSC), which highlights significant gaps in mental health services for youth in the region. The absence of a Jigsaw centre in Waterford means young people must travel considerable distances to access support, a barrier that can deter many from seeking help.

Their efforts have received commendation from local councillors, including Cllr John Pratt, chair of the Waterford Comhairle na nÓg steering committee, who emphasised the importance of bringing Jigsaw to the county. Mayor of Waterford, Cllr Jason Murphy, praised the group’s initiative, noting the positive impact such services could have on the community .

Waterford Comhairle na nÓg’s visit to Leinster House represents a proactive step towards addressing these challenges. By engaging directly with policymakers, they aim to secure the necessary support and resources to establish a Jigsaw centre in Waterford, ensuring that young people in the region have access to the mental health services they need.
