Waterford Comhairle na nÓg (Youth Council) Elections 2021

Waterford Comhairle na nÓg is a Youth Council for young people aged 12 -18 in Waterford City and County. We work with Waterford City and County Council, and we are run by Waterford and South Tipperary Community Youth Service.

We have two main aims –

  1. To represent the Voice of young people from Waterford at different levels in the Community and Government.
  2. To work together on Projects that make a real difference in the County. This year our topic is ‘Climate and Nature’, and we’ve been involved in developing the ‘Communitree’ App to engage young people in taking action to limit the effects of climate change, and we’ve also been planting a Native Irish Tree Trail at the Greenway Carpark by WIT Arena to do something real and practical about the problem.

In February, 2021, we held elections so that we could run our Youth Council by ourselves (with the support of the Coordinator from the Youth Service). We elected different people who have different roles and responsibilities.

We held elections for the following roles, where each candidate had to make their ‘pitch’ and then we all voted as to who we felt would be the best at each role:

  • Chairperson
  • Secretary
  • National Executive Representative
  • WWETB Youth Affairs Committee Representative
  • Steering Committee Representatives
  • Communications Officers

The people who were elected will guide our Youth Council throughout 2021, and we hope that you’ll be hearing a lot more from us!
